deforestation:
when humans remove or thin forests for lumber or to use the land where the trees stood for crops, extraction (mining, oil, or gas), or development as the population increases and people migrate
my hypothesis:
Deforestation is responsible for around 15% of all greenhouse gas emissions, causing a rise in temperatures and changes in the weather. Decreasing the emission of greenhouse gasses to 10% will change the weather, temperature, and amount of other gasses released into the atmosphere to a lesser degree making the earth a cooler temperature.
How does deforestation impact the natural processes of Earth's minerals and rocks?
Resource Extraction
"Mining and deforestation can destabilize soils, increase erosion, and reduce the nutrient levels in terrestrial ecosystems. Increasing erosion can also decrease water quality by increasing sediment and pollutants in rivers and streams." (UGC Berkley) Deforestation causes a dictruction of habitats, affexting the species bidodiversity, incerations and population ranges. Meaning, the homes of living organisms are destroyed in additon to the forced reloaction that is forced upon them. In the view of rocks and minerals from forests extracting gold, copper, diamonds and other precious metal that are important resources to the forests cause a "destructive activity that damages the rainforest ecosystem and causes for people living nearby." (MONGABAY)
How is deforestation impacted by earthquakes?
Landslides Occur
When deforestation occurs the tree roods hold the soild in place, meaning when the trees are ripped from the ground it maes it much eaiser for landslides to occcur after it rains leading to flooding. "The earthquakes sparked numerous landslides in Nepal, which were prevked by a long history of deforestation." (Regmi)
How does deforestation impact the natural processes of Earth's water and water systems?
The Availability of Water
"As we shave the planet of trees, we risk drying up these aerial rivers and the lands that depend on them for rain." Drought and flooding is caused by irregular rainfall. Due to the trees being removed from the soil in deforestation this causes the rain to collect throughout the soil instead of soaking into the trees roots. The same thing goes for droughts when there is not any source of water due to the lack of rain fall the soil doesn’t have any way to store any extra water for when the rainfall reaches a low amount of precipitation also known as a drought.
How does deforestation impact the natural processes of Earth's water and water systems?
"Organic materials from land can flow into the oceans from rivers, which play an important role in nutrient and carbon cycles around the world." Humans are interfiering with deforestation and altering the ways that the ocean is affected by runoff entering the ocean. A 2021 study found that “streams draining agricultural and urban land contained more land-derived material than those draining forested land, and that a substantial fraction of this material reached the coastal environment.”When the organic matterial is disolved and beings to runoff from prior deforestation into the ocean it begins to add a dark film to the oceans water.
