THE PLOT

ACT I

Elsinore, the home of the Danish royal family, is where all of the action of the play takes place. Elsinore is a real place between Denmark and Sweden and the whole play is set in the castle there. In the play it is referred to as Elsinore Castle but the only castle that actually existed in that town was called Kronborg Castle and it still stands today.

Hamlet is the main character of this play, son of the dead king of Denmark and of the queen Gertrude. His language is very ambiguous: he mostly talks using metaphors, similes and wordplay. The words he uses are accurately chosen because there’s always a hidden and more deep meaning behind them. Hamlet is the avenger of the play: the ghost of his father asked him to kill Claudius but he won’t behave until the last act; critics say that’s because of Hamlet's habit of delaying things.

His character too doesn’t actually understand why he doesn’t operate and he says he’s afflicted by a form of depression which was called “melancholy”, caused by the excess of black bile in his body, as is said by the humoral theory of hippocrates. What caused melancholy are two events: his father’s death and his mother’s second marriage only one month after the first event.

He is the major antagonist of the tragedy. He rappresents a very important theme inside Hamlet, betrayal. He only cares about power for this reason he is completely different from other male characters

POLONIUS

OPHELIA

GERTRUDE

LAERTES

Gertrude betrays the late king Hamlet by marrying Claudius. Hamlet, being still depressed about his father’s death, felt betrayed when his mother quickly married his uncle.

Hamlet’s plot to act as though he is mad causes him to deceive and harm primarily Ophelia. By denying his love for Ophelia, he leaves her confused and broken hearted.

The betrayal by Claudius is the reason that Hamlet began his quest for revenge. Claudius murdered his brother, in order to get the throne and his brother's wife.
