Definition and Origins

Electrophones are musical instruments which produce sound by means of electric current. The first one, called musical telegraph, was created by Elisha gray in 1876. Gray discovered that he could control sound from a self vibrating electromagnetic circuit and in doing so invented a basic single note oscillator.

Types and examples

There are two types of electrophones: 1. Electroacoustic. They produce sound through the vibration of tense strings, but use electricity to amplify it. Therefore, if we unplug them, the sound they produce is very weak.

2. Electronics. The signal is produced and amplified through processes based exclusively on electricity. This type of instrument only works if we plug it into electricity. If we don't, they won't be able to make any sound.

Curious facts

The Electrophone was a sort of upside-down pair of headphones that Victorian ladies and gentlemen would hold under their chins. The headset was connected through telephone lines to music halls, churches and theatres, generally in the London area.
