Mental Health and Addiction Counselors

Mental health counselors provide counseling or psychotherapy for people struggling with life problems, emotional issues, or mental health disorders. They work in private practice, agency settings, hospitals, mental health treatment centers, and colleges / universities. Addiction counselors work with individuals who are struggling with addictions, such as substance abuse, eating disorders, gambling, and sexual addictions. They focus on treatment, prevention, recovery, and relapse prevention. They work in community agencies, private practice, and/or rehabilitation facilities.

School and Career Counselors

School counselors perform a wide variety of roles and functions in elementary, middle, and secondary schools, including individual and group counseling, consultation and coordination. They work in public and private elementary, middle, and high schools. Career counselors help people make career decisions, explore career path options based on their education, skills, interests, and personality, and use career inventories and assessment tools to assist with career decision making. They work in private practice, colleges and universities, career centers, and employee assistance programs and organizations.

Counseling Psychologists

Counseling psychologists assist relatively healthy people in solving developmental problems and functioning more effectively. They're trained to evaluate a person's psychological health using clinical interviews, psychological evaluations, and testing. They provide individual, group counseling, couples, and family counseling. They may teach or conduct research. They may have specialized training in a specific theory of counseling. Note that not all psychologists are practitioners (provide counseling / therapy). However, counseling psychologists are practitioners. A doctoral degree in counseling psychology (PhD or PsyD.) and licensure are required to be a counseling psychologist.

Marriage, couple, and family therapists are specifically trained to work with couples and families in family systems and tend to have specialty coursework in couples and family therapy, family life stages, and human sexuality. They provide individual, family, couples, and/or group counseling. They work in private practice and a variety of agency settings.
