A introduction in the conditionals
The Conditionals
The conditionals are tenses used to speculate about what could happen, this tense is divided in 4 Types, and the last is divided in two too, In the image you can see all the types of this tense.
Type 0
Structure If / When + Present Simple + Present Simple
This is used when you are saying something that always is true, in the type 0 conditionals the tense in both parts of the sentence is in simple present, for example "if it's rains, tennis lessons are held in the gym"
Example - If I put an Ice Cream in the sun, it melts ( If + Present simple + Present simple ) - When I put a piece of paper in a fire, it burns ( When + Present Simple + Present Simple )
Structure If / When + Present Simple + Future Simple If / When + Present Simple + Imperatives
Type 1
This is used when you are making a prediction, promises, posibilities or cause and consequence, in type 1 conditionals the structure is composed of one of the sentences in present simple and the second is in future simple, for example, "If I study today, I'll go to the party tonight".
Example - If it rains, I won't go to the park ( If + Present simple + Future simple ) - She'll be late if the train is delayed ( Future Simple + if + Present Simple )
Structure If + Past Simple + Conditional (would, migth) + Verb Infinitive
Type 2
This is used when you are saying an hypotesis, unreal situation, unlikely situation or giving an advise, using one sentence in past simple, and after that use a conditional and the verb infinitive, for example "If I lived in a big city, I would go out more often"
Example - If I had money, I would buy a car ( If + Past simple + Conditional + Verb Infinitive ) - If I were you, I would not do it ( If + Past Simple + Conditional + Verb Infinitive )
Structure If + Past Perfect + Conditional Perfect ( Would Have + The Verb In Past Participle )
Type 3
This is used to regret about a situation in the past, make an hypotesis about the past, theorical past situation, an impossible situation because it already had happened, for example, "If you had told me about the meeting, I would have come"
Example - If you had worked harder, you would have passed your exam ( If + Past Perfect + Conditional Perfect ) - If you hadn't been late for work, the boss wouldn't have gotten furious ( If + Past Perfect + Conditional Perfect )
Structure If + Past Perfect + Present Conditional ( Migth , Would or Wouldn't + Verb )
Mixed Conditionals
This is used to say the Present result of a past condition , for example, "If you had crashed the car, you might be in trouble"
Example - If I had listened to your advice, I wouldn't be in the mess ( If + Past Perfect + Present Conditional ) - If we had looked at the map, we wouldn't be lost ( If + Past Perfect + Present Conditional )
Structure If + Past Simple + Perfect Conditional ( Would / Wouldn't + have + Past Participle )
Mixed Conditionals
This is used to say the past result of a present or continuing condition, for example, "If I wasn't afraid of spiders, I would have picked it up"
Example - If I were a good cook, I would have Invited them to dinner ( If + Past Simple + Perfect Conditional ) - If you weren't such a poor dancer, you would have got a job in the chorus line in that musical ( If + Past Simple + Perfect Conditional )
