Time Period

While the early Aztec people may have formed in the 12th century, these people did not settle down into their permanent home until 1325, when, on a small island in Texcoco, when they built their capital city Tenochtitlán. The Aztecs peaked around 1519; the Aztecs had produced many inventions, such as the modern Calendar and a unique and efficient farming system. The capital was producing goods and had formed a great military. Overall, life was well. The Aztecs lasted roughly 2 thousand years before, in 1521, Spanish arrival sparked a conflict between Moctezuma II, attempting to create peace, and the citizens revolting killing Moctezuma II and collapsing the empire, to be taken over by the Spanish.

Art/ Architecture

Scholars have determined that The Arts were a significant religious expression. Arts, such as sculpting, painting, and drawing, were most commonly found in abundance in temples or places of religion. However, within the city, you could find everyday miniature sculptures of deities or gods in homes. Many others believe that song, dance, baskets, and feather designs were also forms of Art, although much evidence has long disintegrated. As for architecture, architects used this to define class, amongst people's homes and temples, from aviaries.

Temples were often carved in detail and intricate designs, with bright colors and high ceilings. At the same time, public places were decorated with more straightforward designs and neutral colors. The houses ranged from higher importance to least in an outer ring from the town square. While the bigger home was generally large and nicely colored, the places got significantly smaller and plain as you got further away from the city.

Class/Hierarchy

The Aztecs uniquely formed power, as the Emperor often had many wives and children, so being born into royalty did not necessarily mean you would become necessary. You were expected to fight your worth in the military to earn your way to becoming the emperor. If you were deemed the best, you would be at the top of the rank, and when the emperor was to die, those four who remained at the top would be selected as the new emperor. Unlike our government, ordinary people were not allowed to vote. People of the importance of about 30 made up the people who chose the new emperor.

Now those who were not chosen would be added to this group. While slavery was part of this empire, it was, however, not determined by race. Slavery was like a jail to the Aztecs. If you went into debt, you would become a slave. If you made a bet and lost, you could become a slave. Enslaved people were not poorly treated; they were a form of house cleaners for the emperor, or people of importance, Although some were used for sacrifices. Also, unlike enslaved people in America, you could become free of slavery; if you paid off your debt or had a severed amount of time, you could go back to your life as not a slave.

Ancient Civilization Deep Thinking Land productivity limiting human population

Cal/Km2/Day

Calculating how many humans can live off of a certain amount of land.

Different ways of hunting for food, like an HG or a herder can produce different amounts of calories.

As our resources and abilities grow, you can produce more and more calories, per Km2 of land.

Now while all of this might be interesting to know, why do we need to know this? Well, I think it’s important to know where and how our food comes from. It’s important to know to look at and find cures to world hunger, instead of reasons. Finally it’s important to look at these things to really grasp how our ancestors lived and they really went through, for what we call simple food, when they called it survival.
