Pacing Guide
Pacing guides are informed by the curriculum map.A pacing guide is a roadmap that breaks down curriculum into a linear progression of what to teach by weeks or months, spanning the duration of a course.Pacing guides provide a clear plan of standards needing to be taught in a sequential order that supports the logically progression of learning for students. They tell the teacher what to teach and when, along with milestones for assessments.Pacing guides show the progression of learning objectives taught and the time allotted which helps teachers prioritize their time spent on each objective as they plan out their daily lesson plans.Student achievement is greater with the use of a pacing guide as it ensures adequate time is spent teaching essential materials supportive of student mastery of learning.- Cescon, 2022
Differences
Lesson Plans
Lesson plans contain: - Learning targets and success criteria attainable by the end of each lesson. - A collection of materials to aid students in the learning process - Activities and strategies that guide students in taking ownership of learning through a balance of direct instruction and guided teaching. - Engagement strategies, accommodation and cultural awareness for unique learners needs - Methods for assessing student understanding of new concepts -Indeed, 2021
Between Curriculum Maps, Pacing Guides, & Lesson Plans
Mapping is a collaborative process for teachers, in partnership with all stakeholders in the building to develop a school-wide interdisciplinary curriculum plan that creates consistency for all learners with a focus on student learning outcomes related to content standards. It is a systematic breakdown of content to determine curriculum structures, defining how student learning takes place. - Archambault & Masunaga, (2015) Curriculum maps are made up of units of study that entails big ideas, essential questions, and skills aligned to content standards. Activities and strategies with in a curriculum map are focused on what we want students to know and be able to do with each objective or standard. Curriculum maps guide teachers practice in why, when, and where the learning will take place. - School of Education, 2018Curriculum mapping provides teachers clarity of standards causing them to effectively communicate standards and learning objectives to students, thus enhancing students awareness and achievement.
Created by the teacher, lesson plans help teachers be more organized and teach better. The progression of each lesson builds on each other to develop students understanding towards mastery of the overarching goals and standards of the unit. Lesson plans allow students a hands on experience to explore new concepts and make meaning through engaging activitie supporting mastery of their end goal. - Johnson, 2014
