Echolocation

This allows the animals to move around in pitch darkness, so they can navigate, hunt, identify friends and enemies, and avoid obstacles. Echolocation allows bats to fly at night as well as in dark caves. This is a skill they probably developed so they could locate night-flying insects that birds can’t find.

Echolocation certain animals to determine the location of objects using reflected sound. Animals that use echolocation include bats and dolphins.

ULTRASOUND SCANS

Also known as sonography, ultrasound imaging uses a probe to both transmit sound waves into the body and record the waves that echo back. The amplitude of the sound signal and the time it takes for the wave to travel through the body provide the information necessary to produce an image.

Ultrasound waves are at such a high frequency that they are beyond human hearing.

UltRasonic weapons

Sonic and ultrasonic weapons are weapons of various types that use sound to injure or incapacitate an opponent. Some sonic weapons make a focused beam of sound or of ultrasound; others produce an area field of sound.

Police utilise these weapons because they are non-lethal. However, anyone within 100 metres will experience 'extreme' pain, and when used to generate high frequencies the weapons can cause permanent hearing loss. This technology is often used for crowd-control purposes.

When we speak, we communicate not only with the words we choose, but also with the patterns of sound we create and the movements that create them. Many animals use sound to communicate, for example birds chirp to indicate danger or find a mate.

One of the most common ways sound is used for entertainment is in movies and television shows, where sound effects help to create a more realistic and immersive experience. Music is also commonly used in entertainment, where it can add a certain level of emotion or tenstion to a scene.
