LEGALIZATION OF DOCUMENTS

n order to apply for the Residence Visa to Portugal, it will be mandatory to legalize your civil registration documents, such as, your Criminal Record, Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, Civil Partnership and others that you may need to present to the Portuguese Authorities. Legalization is mandatory because it demonstrates that the document is authentic through the signature and stamp affixed to the document. For that, you have at your disposal two different ways that you can use:

Option 1

Option 2

utenthication + Legalization at the Portuguese Consulate

postille - Hague Convention, 5th October, 1961

  • It is a much faster legal process, since you do not need to go through as many institutions. It is only necessary to issue the apostille so that your papers can be valid in another country.
  • For that, it is mandatory the country where the document is issued is part of Hague Convention.
  • Present the document before Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country where the document is issued.
  • After the document has been legalized by MOFA, present it before the Competent Portuguese Consulate of the country where the document was issued.

ranslation of documents

Besides the legalization, all the documents must be translated to Portuguese.

  • If you decide to translate outside of the Portuguese territory, the translation itself must be either legalized or apostilled, considering the country of its issue.
  • On the other hand, if the translation is made inside of the Portuguese territory, no further procedures are needed.
  • In any case, it is highly recommended that the translation takes place after the legalization or apostille related to the original document.
