Predicting types of Bonds
Whats and oxidation Numbner
Oxidation number, also called oxidation state, the total number of electrons that an atom either gains or loses in order to form a chemical bond with another atom. Each atom that participates in an oxidation-reduction reaction is assigned an oxidation number that reflects its ability to acquire, donate, or share electrons. Fe3+, for example, has an oxidation number of +3 because it can donate three electrons to form a chemical bond, while the oxygen ion O2− has an oxidation number of −2 because it can aquire two electrons.

How an oxidation number is determined and how it is related to bond type
Oxidation numbers are related to the polarity of the bond between two atoms.
The basic rule is:
The more electronegative atom gets ALL of the shared electrons. For example, in CO₂, the more electronegative O atoms get all of the shared electrons. They end up with eight valence electrons each. Since they have each gained two electrons, their oxidation numbers are -2. The C atom has no valence electrons. It has lost four electrons, so its oxidation number is +4. The sum of the oxidation numbers is zero.

Cations and anions
You are probabling wondering what cations and anions are, well boths of this thing are Ions and an ion is a particle of an unequeal number of protons and electrons, so whenever we have that you are going to have a particle a charge, if they are more protons than electrons the charge is going to be positive if there are more electrons than protons the charge will be negativeSo Cations are ions with positive charges, they have more protons than electrons and Anions are ions with negative charges they have more electrons than protons. Atoms are electrically neutral they have equal numbers of protons and electrons, so they have no net charge
