REPORTED SPEECH

The main function of reported speech / indirect style is to refer to what another person said. We can use it in two ways: Direct speech and Indirect speech. Direct speech You use direct speech to explicitly quote what the other person said. In this case, that person's words must be enclosed in quotation marks ("").

Regularly speaking or writing in reported speech you will use the reported verbs, which are say and tell, to refer to what was said.

SIndirect speech / Indirect speech In this type of speech, the quotation marks are not necessary, since what the other person said is not conveyed literally. Its structure is characterized by the fact that you use the pronoun that to introduce what the other person said.

Rules for using the reported speech

To use it, you have to consider some simple rules. Rule N°1: You must learn that, in the reported speech, the verb tenses change. That is to say, in direct speech or in the direct style, all the expressions of verbal tenses are in the present. But when you use reported speech or reported speech, this verb changes to the past tense. However, there are two exceptions that you will see later.

Rule N°3: The adverbs of time also change. The adverbial phrases of time also undergo changes. They tend to change when we speak in reported speech, usually from the present to the past.

Rule No. 2: The tenses of modal verbs, also known as modal verbs in English, also change. As we mentioned above, tenses change once you go from direct to indirect speech, and modal verbs don't escape this either, except would, could, should, might and ought to.
