Introduction

This lesson plan is developed by the Interactive Research Methods Lab's team at Kennesaw State University. The aim of the lesson plan is to help high school students to understand the process of developing a research design and literature review for their projects completed in the AP Seminar and AP Research with Mr. Juan Mora and Mrs. Tracye Bulger. The proposed activities within the lesson plan are in alignment with the mission in the AP Capstone Seminar at the River Ridge High School: focus on help students develop strong skills in critical thinking (view issues from multiple perspectives and create arguments based on evidence) and conducting research (explore various research methods and complete research projects). The lesson was implemented in the Interactive Research Methods Lab (IRML) on 01/12/2023 from 9.30 am to 11.30 am. The session was lead by Drs. Anete Vásquez and Mei-Lin Chang.

This lesson plan will help high school students reach a deep understanding of the key elements that should be included in sound research designs. To do so, this unit will help them identify the nine steps proposed by the Hopscotch Model (Jorrín-Abellán, 2016, 2019) to develop well-informed research designs. To facilitate the process, students will be provided with an example of the nine steps extracted from a published study (An, 2022) that will be read prior to the session in the Interactive Research Methods Lab.

1. The proposed activities will help students develop their research skills. These include logic, and problem-solving skills (Bauer & Bennett, 2003) and experimental skills like design, data collection, data analysis, understanding of limitations, and research ethics (John & Creighton, 2012; Russell, Hancock, & McCullough, 2007). Students also learn how to seek out and consume the relevant literature and learn the disciplinary language (Bauer & Bennett, 2003). 2. The activities will help students understand the steps of conducting a literature review.

Step 0: Prior to the face-to-face session in the IRML, students will be asked to read the following article: An, S. (2022). Re/presentation of Asian Americans in 50 states US history standards. The Social Studies, 113 (4), 171-184. Step 1: Introduction and Overview The IRML will be introduced to students. A team member of the lab will describe its structure based on the first 4 steps proposed by Hopscotch using the article as an example. The team member will use the table in Appendix A to explain how Hopscotch Model could be used to identify the key elements in the study.. The functioning of the augmented reality contents will also be shown. (20') Step 2: Demonstration of how to use the iPad to interact with the resources The IRML team member will demonstrate how to use the ipads to access the Hopscotch Model and the Recommendation System to search for literature. (5’) Step 3: Hands-on Workshop time Participating students will collaboratively use the recommendation system or to interact with the augmented multimedia contents present in the lab, or the 360 Virtual Tour of the Interactive Research Methods Lab (see: https://irml.kennesaw.edu) (60’) In this stage, students may use the Appendix A to fill out the third column of the table by describing in their own words the key elements that need to be considered to generate a solid research design for their study. To do so, students will be able to check the second column, in which the research design used in the previously read article has been unpacked. Step 4: Reflection A group discussion will be held in order to reflect upon the decisions made in the previous step (third column of appendix A). (10’-15’ ) Step 5: Overview of final steps of Hopscotch We will give students an overview of the final steps in the Hopscotch Model by applying the following 3 to 4 steps in the model to identify the key elements of the research article on the stability of anxiety sensitivity during adolescence. (15’)
