Interesting Facts

WHO IS HE?

He was one of the most influential British fashion designers of all time, well known for his eccentric catwalks and stunnning designs. Many famous celebrities have worn clothes made by him, such as Madonna, David Bowie, Rihanna and Mick Jagger. He was the head designer at Louis-Vuitton owned company, Givenchy, and started his menswear line.

He also started his own haute-couture fashion label, named after himself, which soon became one of the most successful and influential. Some of his most famous runway shows include "Plato's Atlantis", 2010, "It's a Jungle Out There", 1997, "No. 13", 1999 and "Voss 2001"

He then left London to work in Milan as assistant to fashion designer Romeo Gigli. When he returned, he enrolled at Central Saint Martin's College of Art & Design, then received his M.A in fashion design, where he created his iconic collection inspired by Jack the Ripper.

HIS LIFE & RISE TO FAME

McQueen became friends with designer Isabella Blow, who advocated his work, and supported and inspired him. Soon after, he started designing women's clothes. This company caught the eye of Louis-Vuitton, and he was named head designer of Givenchy, a haute-couture fashion house owned by them. He worked there for five years, but quit because he felt that it constrained his creativity. He then focused on his own company, and created new and exciting designs.

Alexander McQueen was born on 17th March 1969, in a working class family in Lewisham. dropped out of school when he was 16 and found work on Savile Road, famous for being home to many suit tailors. He then continued his fashion designing journey, by working at Angel & Bermans, theatrical costume makers. This is where he developed his dramatic style in his work.

WHY HE INSPIRES ME

Alexander McQueen got where he is by working hard, and forging his own future. He didn't have the most priviledged start in life, but he didn't let that stop him, and made his dream happen by himself

He was an advocate for LGBTQ+ and women's rights, dedicating collections to feminism and women's fight for equality. He was an openly gay man, and wasn't afraid to be himself, even if others would judge him for it.

He also inspires me because I would like to become a fashion designer, and his I love his work. I think that he uses colour in a beautiful way, and conveys thoughts, and emotions in his work in a very exciting manner.

WHAT HE DOES

I love Alexander McQueen's designs, especially with his use of colour and nature motifs, such as butterflies, flowers, plants and animal patterns.

WHY I LIKE HIS WORK

07

I also appreciate the range of cultural influences found in his work. Specifically, his inspiration drawn from the vivid cities in Latin America as well as traditional Japanese kimonos. Lastly, I enjoy the theatrical and dramatic aspect to his pieces and shows. He included holograms of a model, robots, chess games and even a mental asylum in many different runway shows.

I find that his work often evokes emotions and feelings in a very strong way, and even sometimes can tell a story or thought.
