Welcome to science class!

No materials are needed for today's class.
In the chat box: Would you want to live on the International Space Station? Why or why not?

Today we will:

* describe how the Earth, sun, and moon move in space and as a system * explain how gravity affects the Earth, the sun, and the moon

Log in to the Classkick to show what you know!
Remember: You must complete the work in the Classkick to submit the lesson blank. You DO NOT need to complete the Classkick AND the Edio lesson!

Show what you know!

How does Earth move in space? How does the moon move in space? How do the Earth, sun, and moon move around each other?
Before we start today's lesson, there are two important words we need to know rotate and revolve.

Revolve

Rotate

* to travel all the way around*
* spin *

The Earth rotates on its axis.

Sun

Revolve

Rotate

* to travel all the way around*
* spin *

Sun

Rotate

Did you know? The Earth's ROTATION is why we have day and night.
And you also know this is not just funny, it's true.
TO REVOLVE means to travel in a circular path.

Earth

Sun

The Earth REVOLVES around the sun.
TO REVOLVE means to travel in a circular path.
The moon REVOLVES around Earth.
Watch the video to observe the Earth REVOLVING around the sun, and the moon REVOLVING around the Earth.
The word ORBIT means "path."
Which number shows the orbit of the Earth around the sun?

Which number shows the orbit of the moon around the Earth?

What is the force that holds the Earth in orbit around the sun?

GRAVITY holds the Earth in its orbit, or path, around the sun.Without gravity, the Earth would float away.

Sun

What is the force that holds the Moon in orbit around the Earth?

Moon

GRAVITY holds the moon in its orbit, or path, around the Earth.Without gravity, the moon would float away.

The moon revolves around the Earth. Can you think of anything else that moves around the Earth in an orbit?
The Earth ROTATES about 365 times as it REVOLVES once around the sun.
Go to the Classkick to answer questions on pages 2 and 3.
Don't float away yet...
  • Remember... you must finish the Classkick to submit the lesson blank.
  • Don't forget to submit the lesson!
Are you a sun, Earth, and moon expert?
