  • On August 4, 2014, Guinea’s Ministry of Health reported a total of 495 suspected and confirmed cases of Ebola virus disease, of whom 395 had died. Ebola is a virus that causes hemorrhagic fever. The virus is most often transmitted to people from wild animals, such as fruit bats from the Pteropodidae family. It spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission. Fatality rates in humans run as high as 90%. Officials struggled to contain the disease from spreading out of the West African region. They looked at containment strategies employed during previous epidemics, such as those of yellow fever and smallpox.

  • The United Nations’ system is based on five principal organs: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Secretariat, and the International Court of Justice. The General Assembly is the main deliberative assembly of the United Nations. It is composed of all United Nations member states, and is led by a president elected from the member states and 21 vice presidents. The General Assembly can put forth nonbinding resolutions and make recommendations on any matter within the scope of the UN to the UN Security Council. The Security Council comprises 15 member states and 5 permanent states with veto power. The Security Council is charged with maintaining peace and security among countries and makes all final and binding decisions to be pursued by the UN. The UN Secretariat is headed by the Secretary General. It provides studies, information, and facilities needed by the UN bodies for their meetings. It also carries out tasks as directed by the Security Council, the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council, and other UN bodies.
