DEFINITION

Continuous Tense is used to describe events that happened or took place simultaneolsly in the past.

Past continuous tense

General understanding past continuous tense sentence is a sentence that states the events taking place in the past. On the use of Past Continuous Tense verb used must end with - ing / (verb+ ing). Past Continuous Tense form of time using this type of "to be" (was/ were).

(+) s + Was / WERE + VERB + (-ING) (-) S + WAS / WERE + NOT + VERB (-ING) (?) WAS / WERE + S + VERB (-ING)

PATTERN settence

POSITIVE : (+) s + was / were + verb + (- ing)

EXAMPLE: 1. Adinda was talking to me when her mother called. 2. I was eating while my brother was studiying. 3. Mia was washing her bike when i passed his house.

NEGATIVE (-) s + was / were + not + verb (- ing)

EXAMPLE: 1. Adinda was not talking to me when her mother called. 2. I wasn't eating while may brother was studying. 3. Mia was washing her bike when i passed his house.

INTERROGATIVE (?) was / were + s + verb (- ing)

EXAMPLE: 1. Was Adinda talking to you when her mother called? 2. Were you eating while your brother was studying? 3. Was Mia washing her bike when you pashed his house?

TIPS TO RECOGNIZE TENSE

1. Past Continuous tense is formed with the auxilliary verb " be" , in the form of was or were , because the time it occured was in the past .2. Past continuous tense includes progresive tense, so the correct verb or verb is the present participle + V (- ing). 3. " Be(was)" is used for singular nouns and singular pronouns. 4. Conversely, "be(were)" is used for a plural subject in the form of plural noun.

CONCLUSIONS

The Past Continuous Tense has the functions of declaring an event or action that was taking place in the past which is formed with the past form of to be (was / were) + present participle (v-1) + (ing).
