CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
Circulatory System
The circulatory system is made up of blood vessels that carry blood away from and towards the heart. ARTERIES carry blood away from the heart and VEINS carry blood back to the heart. The circulatory system carries oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to cells, and removes waste products, like carbon dioxide.
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM?
The systemic circulation carries blood from the heart to all the other parts of the body and back again.
The pulmonary circulation is a short loop from the heart to the lungs and back again.

What's in our blood?
BLOOD is one of the most important things in our body. Blood carries NUTRIENTS and OXYGEN to all the parts of our body so we can grow. Adults have about 5 liters of blood inside of them.
LET'S TALK ABOUT BLOOD!
WHAT DOES our BLOOD LOOK LIKE?
RED BLOOD CELLS carry oxygen from your lungs to the rest of the body. WHITE BLOOD CELLS help defend your blood against disease. PLATELETS help you stop bleeding if you cut yourself. PLASMA is what red cells, white cells and platelets float around in,

Our Heart
Your heart is actually a muscle. It is about the size of your fist. It is located in the middle of your chest, on the left side. The heart pumping helps push blood through your body.

LEFT ATRIUM
AORTA
RIGHT VENTRICLE
RIGHT ATRIUM
WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE HEART?
The AORTA is a tube that helps send blood through out your body. The RIGHT ATRIUM and the RIGHT VENTRICLE receive blood that needs oxygen. The LEFT ATRIUM and the LEFT VENTRICLE receive blood full of oxygen. Then pushes blood through the aorta to the rest of the body.
PARTS OF THE HEART
WHAT ARE THE LAYERS OF THE HEART WALL?
The MITRAL VALVE lets oxygen-rich blood from your lungs pass from the left atrium into the left ventricle.
The AORTIC VALVE opens the way for oxygen-rich blood to pass from the left ventricle into the aorta.
The TRICUSPID VALVE regulates blood flow between the right atrium and right ventricle.
The PULMONARY VALVE controls blood flow from the right ventricle into the pulmonary arteries, which carry blood to your lungs to pick up oxygen.

The terms Diastole and Systole refer to when the heart muscles relax and contract.DIASTOLE is when the heart muscle relaxes. When the heart relaxes, the chambers of the heart fill with blood. SYSTOLE is when the heart muscle contracts. When the heart contracts, it pushes the blood out of the heart and into the large blood vessels of the circulatory system. From here, the blood goes to all of the organs and tissues of the body.

Heartbeat
Your heart rate is the number of times that your heart beats in a minute. Your body automatically controls your heartbeat to match whatever you're doing or what's happening around you. When your heart rate is too fast or too slow, that can be a sign of heart or other health problems. The ability to feel your heart rate throughout your body is also a potential way for doctors to diagnose medical conditions
WHAT IS YOUR HEART RATE?
Press two fingers on the side of your neck or if it's easier for you, on your wrist. And feel your pulse. Count the number of beats in 6 seconds. Multiply by 10 to get your heartbeats per minute.
HOW DO WE CALCULATE OUR HEART RATE?
FIND OUT WHAT IS YOUR heart rate resting and doing exercises and let's share it with the class on our next sesSION.

Nutrients and Water
Nutrients and water are absorbed in the system. They enter the blood stream via the capillaries where they are passed through to the arteries. The blood is circulated throughout the body (including being oxygenated in the lungs and the heart). Nutrients are absorbed by the cells that need them and water is absorbed by all cells.
WHY DO WE NEED IT?
WHAT ARE THE functions of the nutrients in our body?
Blood is about 92% water and it carries nutrients and oxygen throughout the body. Nutrients from the food we eat are broken down in the digestive system where they become water-soluble, which means they are dissolved in water. Water allows these nutrients to pass through the capillaries within the intestinal walls to the blood and circulatory system where the valuable nutrients and oxygen can be distributed throughout the body to all the cells and organs.

Healthy Diet
A nutritious, well-balanced diet – along with physical activity is the foundation of good health. Healthy eating includes consuming high-quality proteins, carbohydrates, heart-healthy fats, vitamins, minerals and water in the foods you take. Eating in this manner helps you maintain your body’s everyday functions, promotes optimal body weight and can assist in disease prevention.
WHY IS EATING HEALTHY IMPORTANT?
WHAT does a healthy eating plate look like?
Good blood circulation is essential for the body because it allows the transport of oxygen and nutrients to cells. Diet plays a vital role in blood flow, and certain foods can have a positive or negative effect on circulation.

Exercising
The circulatory system is affected by many factors including genetic make-up, diet, as well as exercise. However, exercise is one of the most important factors to keep your heart and circulation healthy. As we all know, the more you exercise, the more your excess body fat reduces. This means that the circulatory system has less body mass to supply, reducing the work on the heart and hence reducing blood pressure further.
WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR CIRCULATORY SYSTEM DURING EXERCISE?
The heart’s stroke volume, which is the amount of blood pumped with each beat, will increase. Every time the heart beats, blood is ejected from the left ventricle and out into the arteries. Each heartbeat pushes this blood throughout the body, carrying oxygen-rich blood to the tissues. As people exercise, their heart will become stronger and will be able to pump more oxygen-rich blood around their body.
What are the long-term effects of exercise on the cardiovascular system?
Exercise helps to keep your heart strong and pumping effectively. Just like any muscle, the more you exercise it, the better it works. The more used to exercise you become, the lower the pulse rate becomes as the heart beats more efficiently. We know that in younger people, regular exercise causes certain changes in the heart, including lowering resting heart rate and increasing the amount of blood pumped with each heartbeat, which make the heart a better pump and can help prevent against heart disease in later life.
HOW EXERCISE HELPS YOUR BLOOD FLOW?
- BOXING- TEAM SPORTS - AEROBIC - CARDIO CLASSES - BRISK WALKING
- JOGGING- SWIMMING - CYCLING - DANCING - ROWING
The best activity to improve circulation is aerobic exercise – the kind that makes you mildly out of breath.

Damaging our Circulatory System
Smoking, being inactive, obesity, eating poorly, and drinking alcohol are harmful habits to our circulatory system and the cause of heart disease. Together, they derange metabolism and change how cells and tissues work. They also disturb the markers of health we worry about so much: blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar.
HABITS THAT HARM OUR CIRCULATION
Chemicals in cigarette smoke cause the cells that line blood vessels to become swollen and inflamed. This can narrow the blood vessels and can lead to many cardiovascular conditions. Smoking damages the heart and blood vessels very quickly, but the damage is repaired quickly for most smokers who stop smoking. Even long-time smokers can see rapid health improvements when they quit. Within a year, heart attack risk drops dramatically. Within five years, most smokers cut their risk of stroke to nearly that of a nonsmoker.
HOW SMOKING HARMS THE CARDIOVASCULARSYSTEM?
Too much alcohol can raise blood pressure and weight, increasing risk of a heart attack, stroke and type 2 diabetes. There is a very clear link between regularly drinking too much alcohol and having high blood pressure. Over time, high blood pressure puts strain on the heart muscle and can lead to cardiovascular disease. Those who drink regularly and consume more than the lower risk guidelines are likely to be advised to cut down or stop drinking completely.
