What is Life?
This weeks BIG IDEA is that you can tell the difference between living and non-living things by figuring out what they can do, and determining if they show the characteristics of a living thing.
You are alive, aren’t you? How about dogs and cats? They are alive, too. You probably just know this without knowing exactly why. How about worms, trees, or coral? You are going to be learning about a lot of different living things, but first let’s learn to tell if something is alive. Scientists have found that all living things are made of tiny building blocks called cells (selz). Just like you might build a castle out of Legos of different sizes and shapes, living things are made of stacks of different cells. Unfortunately, most cells are too tiny to see so we will learn other ways to tell if something is a living thing. Think of your own body when you read this list of living characteristics

The 7 Characteristics of Living Things
01
All living things are made up of one or more living cells.
Cellular Organization
Growth & Development
03
All living things are able to grow and change as they age.
Reproduction
02
All living things create offspring that carry on their DNA.
Energy Use
04
All living things create and use energy.
Homeostasis
05
All living things are able to maintain themselves.
Response to Enviornment
06
All living things are able to sense their enviornment and react accordingly.
Evolution & Adaptation
07
All living things have the ability to adapt to their enviornment, even if it happens slowly.

Living
Hypothesize
A HYPOTHESIS is an educated guess that scientists make before they begin to collect data to answer their question. They use information they already know from books, experience or other observations to make a guess about what the results of their currect experiment will be. Before we do our first lab, look at the pictures below. Use any prior knowledge you may have and decide whether you think that is a picture of something that is LIVING or NON-Living and drag them to the correct column.

Collecting Data
The next step in our research is to collect data. We made an educated guess (hypothesis) already, and now we need to gather some proof to find out if we are correct or not! Lets review our criteria for living things. All living things:
have Cellular Organization
Use Energy
can Maintain Homeostasis
can Reproduce
Respond to Their Enviornment
can Grow & Develop
can Evolve & Adapt
Record your conclusions
