What is philosophy?
The word philosophy comes from the Greek language and means ‘love of wisdom’. Philosophy is the study of knowledge; how we think; what we value; and who we are. It involves asking questions, thinking and discussing ideas.

Pythagoras
(570 - 495 BC)
Pythagoras was the first great philosopher and lived from around 580 to 500 BC. He was the creator of one of the first mathematical formulae. None of his writing has survived so it is not easy for historians to establish his influence. He is famous for his theory to calculate the length of the longest side of the right-angled triangle. He developed a formula to work this out which is still taught in schools today. He left Greece in 532 BC and founded a political academy in Crotone, Italy. He had to leave Crotone in 510 BC for Metapontum where he died.

Socrates
(470 - 399 BC)
Socrates was the ‘wisest man of all Greece’, according to the Oracle of Delphi. He was born in about 470 BC and lived in Athens. He spent a lot of time discussing ideas with friends. He focused on the question of what ‘goodness’ was. He was famous for developing the Socratic Method, which is a conversation between teacher and student, where the teacher asks questions to explore the student’s knowledge. This basic method is still used in schools and universities today. Socrates made a lot of enemies. He was tried by a jury around 399 BC for not respecting religion and corrupting people, and was sentenced to death.

Plato
(428/27 - 348/47 BC)
Plato was a student of Socrates. He was born in Athens and grew up interested in politics and philosophy. The death of Socrates greatly affected Plato, and he left Athens and travelled around Greece, Egypt and Italy. He returned home in about 387 BC and set up a school where he taught philosophy, law, reasoning, maths and science. He wanted reason to be applied to all thoughts and ideas. He thought about ethics: what was right or wrong; good or evil? Ethics is still studied and discussed today. Plato left behind many written works like The Republic, which are still studied today.

Aristotle
(384 - 322 BC)
Aristotle was a student of Plato. He was born in 384 BC and died around 322 BC. He opened a school in Athens called the Lyceum. He taught many subjects, including biology, astronomy and physics. He invented the study of logic (reasoning) and believed that people could learn everything about the world. Aristotle laid the foundations for modern science - he thought people should observe nature and argued ideas should be based on observations. This approach is still the basis of modern science today. His writings were later used by Roman, Arab and Western European scholars.
