Three examples of funds of knowledge and Cultural Values

Funds of knowledge resource guide

How? They are techniques, skills and experiences that are adapted to fit based on one's daily activities. For example, in the Amish community, young men learn to drive tractors as early as 7 years old. Most 7 year old boys are only riding a bicycle, maybe even with training wheels on in the English community. Another example is making clothing. Amish women sew their own familie clothing. They learn this skill from their mothers, grandmothers and other women in the community.

Funds of knowledge are built around cultural values

How funds of knowledge and cultural values intersect

Equity should be provided to each individual in order to provide a positive relationship with each learner and in order to achieve this, one must understand the cultural values in the community.

Teachers can create multiple points of engagement in the classroom by understanding the different cultures that are part of the communtiy and the different techniques, skills and experiences that create a funds of knowledge for those individuals. Culture is very social, individuals are not born with these funds of knowledge, they are created by their cultural values. "Today, Lancaster County welcomes more than 20% more refugees per capita than other communities in the nation."(Lancaseter County Community Foundation, 2022). Many of these refugees come from Muslim countries and are not familiar with the English langauage and different cultural values. For example, a young refugee may enter a classroom and not make eyecontact or speak up much after their silent period is over. Some teachers may see this as disrespect, however, many come from homes wher they are brought up to be seen and not heard, so participating in class is very much a cultural issue as opposed to what some may think of as a behavioral issue.

how funds of knowledge affect classroom instruction

Societies are becoming very globalized, which is great for building a sense of community and becoming culturally educated. Elanco's mission statement aims to educate, appreciate and contribute to the community and the diversity celebrated here. Technology is one resource that has rapidly changed over the years allowing educators more reources than ever before to celebrate our cultural differences and share our funds of knowledge. Children today need to be prepared to contribute to a future of diverse backgrounds. Technologies in the classroom such as translating divises and virtual field trips to other countries (and even CLASSROOMS) can be used to help promote the acceptance of cultural values within our community here in ELANCO.

"In partnership with family, business, and community, we provide an environment in which all persons are empowered to develop the knowledge, skills, and character to be life-long contributors and leaders in a rapidly changing world community." (ELANCO, 2021)
