This is a unique ELO course framework because it allows the ELO Coordinator and the student to choose the content focus and community-based experience tailored to their unique interests, setting, and needs. The student will start this ELO experience by developing academic and personal goals as well as essential questions. Once they have completed their community-based experience they will then come back to the LMS to complete a final reflection, final project, and final presentation about their experience.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is a dynamic and rewarding career that provides essential support to Maine people, and the best way to know if it’s a good fit for a student is for them to try it out themselves! As an EMS Learner, the student will work with a mentor at their local agency to learn about EMS, meet other healthcare and public safety professionals, and serve their community. By the end of the Level 1 portion of this course, the student will earn the EMS ConnectME Level 1 microcredential awarded by Maine EMS and powered by JMG, be CPR certified, and should understand how EMS may align with your life goals. If the student chooses to progress through Level 2, they will earn the EMS ConnectME Level 2 microcredential awarded by Maine EMS and powered by JMG, become First Aid certified, and may be able to ride on EMS calls. By the end of the ELO: EMS ConnectME course, the student should understand the role of an EMS worker, and whether they want to pursue further EMS education. This Clinical Career Pre-Apprenticeship Program is designed for those exploring a clinical healthcare career with a focus on the roles of Phlebotomist, Medical Assistant, and Certified Nursing Assistant. This program is designed for anyone who wishes to explore a career in healthcare and seeks a guided pathway to potential employment and ongoing training with MaineHealth. It is an unpaid career awareness and learning experience delivered online for the benefit of the participant. The flexible format allows participants to complete the coursework on a schedule that is convenient for them. After successful completion of the pre-apprentice program, participants who qualify will be guaranteed an interview for one of the following training programs at MaineHealth: Phlebotomy School, Medical Assistant Apprenticeship, and Certified Nursing Assistant Training. In addition, successful completers will receive an academic badge from Southern Maine Community College which can be used in the future as a prior learning credential for students wishing to pursue further education. The MaineHealth Clinical Career Pre-Apprentice Program helps participants explore clinical healthcare trainings and pathways at MaineHealth. Through a series of self-paced, online and virtual course modules, participants are introduced to concepts they will encounter in clinical training and the healthcare workplace such as direct patient care; medical terminology; workplace communication; diversity in healthcare; video job shadows; and study skills. They will engage in career interest assessment work, receive information on clinical and non-clinical pathways, and be able to utilize other wrap-around supports to help guide them in their selection of a training program or job that fits their career goals and interests. In this course, created in partnership with Northeastern University’s The Roux Institute, the student will explore the fundamentals of 3D modeling, gaining hands-on experience with 3D modeling software like Tinkercad. Through creative projects, such as designing a speaker, tennis racket, and cell phone, they will learn to express ideas and communicate visually. They will actively apply technology to demonstrate competencies focused on empowerment and creative communication. The course culminates in a self-directed project where they design a unique 3D object, providing an opportunity to showcase their creativity and technical skills.

Maine Career Exploration Badge

The Maine Career Exploration Badge (MCEB) for Maine juniors and seniors is an opportunity to participate in 40 hours of meaningful work experience facilitated through an intentionally designed exploration and reflection process outside of their current classroom requirements. Students receive an academic award of $500 for completion!

ELO: English Writing

This framework is designed to align with an ELO community-based experience with writing-focused English Maine Learning Standards. The student will start by developing an essential question and setting course goals then complete research, analysis, writing, and reflection activities that build to a final project.

ELO: Teaching Assistant

This framework is designed to be completed alongside a placement in a local classroom as a teaching assistant. In their role, and with the support of their mentor teacher, the students will be provided with the opportunity to explore teaching as a career. They will be guided through the process of lesson planning through backward design, with their culminating experience being an opportunity to teach their self-designed lesson plan to the students in their classroom placement.
