Kim Il-Sung

During the war of 1945, the Korean Peninsula was divided in half by the US and Russia. Kim Il Sung formed the Korean Workers Party, a Communist party, and became the first chair leader. He was also the first Supreme Leader of North Korea. He became greedy and wanted to control both parts of Korea causing the Korean War in 1950. It ended in a stalemate with major losses on both sides. During his time of power, he implemented many different laws and created the songbun system which divided society into 3 different groups depending on their political, societal, and economic standings. The groups are the core, the randoms, and the enemies. Each group gets different education, jobs, food rations, and housing. Kim Il Sung took away all human rights from those defined as the bottom level. He also enforced a law that nobody could criticize the government; otherwise, they would be sent to prison camps similar to the ones during the Holocaust. In prison camps, they were starved, beaten for no reason, and worked to the point of death. Pregnant women would be forced to abort their children. To prevent the people from revolting against him, he used propaganda to promote himself as a deity. He utilized education to brainwash children from childhood so that when they grow up, they would know him as their only savior. Even though the people didn’t revolt against the government, other countries still didn’t like him changing people's beliefs from within North Korea. These people tried to depose Kim Il Sung in the August Faction Incident officially called the 2nd Arduous March in 1956. The people that were involved were people from the Yan’an faction which was supported by China and the Soviet-Korean faction supported by Russia. The march only lasted for half of a day and everybody who was involved was arrested and later executed.

Kim Jong-il

After his father died of a heart attack, Kim Jong Il inherited his father’s power and the title of Supreme Leader. To secure his power, his first action was to block all media from outside the country to fool his people into believing North Korea was the strongest country in the world. He used fake news and propaganda. After shutting off all media, he wanted to be the world’s nuclear powerhouse. In the year 2006, he made North Korea’s first-ever nuclear missile and successfully launched a nuclear missile in 2009. He had a close relationship with both leaders of China and Russia who helped him fund all the nuclear tests. He spent all the funding on military and nuclear weapons instead of manufacturing and agriculture, which put North Korea into deep starvation. To prevent the people from revolting and to avoid being accused of starvation, he blamed it on innocent citizens of North Korea saying that they were spies from South Korea and the US. He especially targeted the elderly and sent them off to political camps to be executed. He arrested about 20,000 innocent people. This event took place from 1994 to 1998 and is called the Simhwajo surgeon. On Nov 23, 2010, South Korea did a military drill which caused Kim il sung to think that they were going to prepare for war. He fired 170 missiles and 60 missiles, bombed Yeonpyeong island, and flattened 10 buildings, killing many soldiers and innocent citizens. Due to this military attack, the US was ready to protect South Korea from North Korea. This shows that the US could fight North Korea and maintain world peace. South Korea also escalated the attack to the United Nations. France, England, Germany, along with other countries sent a message to North Korea to stop any military attacks immediately.

Kim Jong-un

After Kim il sang died of diabetes complications on Dec 17, 2011, Kim Jong-un inherited the title of Supreme leader from his father. He spent 9 years to study in Sweden and speaks fluent English, German and, French. Unlike his father and grandfather, who only threatened South Korea. Kim Jong-un threatened the whole world. He enhanced the nuclear weapons and North Korea could destroy the country. Kim Jong-un would often kill for no reason. He killed one of his advisors in public for disrespectful posture in a meeting about using anti-air force weapons. It was also assumed that he assassinated his brother. He also publicly executed his uncle on Dec 13, 2013. The people of Fighters for a Free North Korea (FFNK) based in South Korea, started sending balloons with vitamins and medicine and attached articles against Kim Jong Un. So far they have sent over 2,000,000 balloons to North Korea. On Jun 18, 2018, ex-president Donald Trump met with Kim Jong Un in Singapore to discuss the rising threats of North Korea. Following the meeting, the nuclear power plants slowed down and so did the production of nuclear weapons.

Conclusion

North Korea is the only communist country that still inherits its leadership since 1945. All three leaders Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-il, and Kim Jong-un are dictators. Once they inherited power, they would kill all that opposed them. They all wanted to be worshipped as a deity. They used education and propaganda to influence and brainwash people, so they can have full control. They all blocked media outside of the country and, they only released information confirmed by the government so people only receive selective information. Different from the first 2 Supreme Leaders, Kim Jong-un is the only one that threatened the whole world with nuclear missiles. Therefore many countries keep closely monitoring North Korea to maintain world peace.

Propaganda

I first noticed the weapon coming in the very front with a soldier following. I feel like it is the most important part of their country. I also noticed that the farmer and businessman were in the back. The flag also took a large portion of the poster so that they know what the main goal of the country is. In the background, you can see the city and how urbanized it cities are. This poster is targeting people in North Korea and Western countries to express how modern and great their country is. Since 1945, they have been heavily influenced by the military and they have been brainwashed to believe that the military is the most important part of the country. It is also implied that agriculture and business are the least important part of their country. There is only one woman in the poster who is a farmer showing that men are more important than women. Everybody should support and help the military so that the country can get stronger. The woman in the back is holding a large bundle of wheat showing that the political party will give you more food and joining them would give you more business opportunities shown by the person in the business suit and the builder. There are fireworks in the background symbolizing that they have accomplished their goal or a great festival of victory. They are waving flags around symbolizing how unwavering they are. Everybody should follow the government’s lead so that North Korea will have a bright future.
