When and Where?
While the official festival lasts for 3 days, from 14th to 16th of April, celebrations are prone to last more than a week. Specifically in Luang Prabang, where the holiday is at its most festive, with colorful ceremonies, dances, costumes and even boat races on the Mekong River.

Lao Pho
Among the most served dishes are the sticky rice and green papaya salad. Meats like chicken and pork are grilled and Lao Pho, eggrolls, stews and many desserts are also present.
What do people do?
In Luang Prabang there is a yearly beauty pageant with 7 contestants signifying the seven daughters of “Ca-Bin-Ra-Pom”. People also decorate their Buddha statues with flowers and it is customary to free things, so many people free birds from their cages to make merit. Above everything, the Lao people celebrate the holiday with their family and each household has their own traditions.
The Celebration
Sand also plays a big role, as people bring it into temple grounds, where it is made into stupas(mounds) and decorated, before being given to the monks as a sign of merit.
The main centerpoint of the holiday is Water. People wash their homes, the Buddha statues/images, monks and any friends or passer-bys on the street. The younger generation uses water to wash their elders’ hands and feet as a sign of respect. The water is also perfumed with natural perfumes or simply flowers.
