Slide 2 is the mini lesson designed to model the use of homophones before working with the skill independently. I Do: Explain to students what a homophone is (on the slide). Model with new and knew. Use the Homphones Think Sheet to model the justification of answers. Ex. knew is the past tense of to know whereas new is not existing before; made, introduced, or discovered recently or now for the first time or already existing but seen, experienced, or acquired recently or now for the first time. Think Aloud about the context and why the word choice makes sense - focusing on the meaning. We Do: Work through the next example together with students. Help them come up with the justification for the correct answer choices and write the justification on the Homophones Think Sheet. You Do: Students play the game, complete the Exit Ticket, and extended activity (if time permits).
