There were an estimated 393 casualties 300 of them being British, 93 of them were Patriots. No one knows who fired the first shot of the war. The Lexington militia didn't intend to fight the British. The Battles of Lexington and Concord only lasted 1 day

Why did the British march on Lexington and Concord?
The British marched into Lexington and Concord intending to suppress the possibility of a rebellion by seizing the Patriot's weapons. They also wanted to destroy any rebel military stores.
The British were outnumbered once they got into Concord and had to retreat. Also the Patriots were told by two spies, Samuel Adams and John Hancock, that the British were on their way to Lexington and Concord, so all of the militia's were ready when the British got there.
The Patriots didn't send many militiamen to Lexington so they could set up in Concord
