Media Staff

Our Media Team help capture the magic at camp for campers and staff to remember for years to come. The media team is responsible for following our schedule throughout the day, editing and uploading photos for the family members at home to see nightly, and to produce an end of session recap video each week.

Athletic Trainers

We have two certified Athletic Trainers at camp each session, working alongside our Nurses and Wellness Specialists to provide holistic care. Athletic Trainers are on the field during every soccer session and provide pre and post-training treatments. An air-conditioned Training Room is located in the Pavilion adjacent to the soccer fields. Athletes can receive treatment, get taped, address injuries, and ice sore muscles in the AT’s office.

Meals at Camp

Our camp food is second to none - we serve healthy and nutritional, kid-friendly food. All meals offer hot buffet choices in addition to a fruit bar with a rotating selection of in-season fruits. Lunch and dinner always include a salad bar and pasta option. We can support most dietary restrictions. It is important that staff share dietary restrictions with directors before arriving at camp.

Staff Time Off

Staff members at BSA all work a 6-day week. Throughout the summer, every staff member will be scheduled at least two hours off per day. Cabin counselors will also be scheduled an evening off each week. Every staff member will enjoy a 24 hour period off every week. Typically Thursday 6pm-Friday 6pm, or Friday 6pm-Saturday 6pm. All staff members will be told of their assigned days off at the start of the summer.

The Berkshires offer a lot to do during time off- from hiking up Mount Greylock to shopping at a mall or exploring local towns, such as Great Barrington. Camp does their best to support travel during time off with camp vehicles.

Elective Staff

Our Elective Team is responsible for all non-soccer related activities. The team is made up of our Lifeguards, Cooking Instructors, Arts and Crafts Instructors, and General Counselors. They are all supported in their elective program area by our Program Director Mandie Titley. The elective activities offered at Berky are part of our camp culture to help our campers learn new skills, get some well-deserved downtime from their soccer sessions, and most importantly, to have fun and enjoy all that camp has to offer! Most days, there are four elective sessions a day. Each elective staff member will be assigned to facilitate their activity area at least 3 sessions a day. Elective staff will be scheduled one session as an off-period, and will get another hour off during the day between sessions.

Office Staff

Our Office Staff members work in our Camp Office alongside the Directors helping oversee the day-to-day operation. Key responsibilities include building relationships and supporting our 1200+ enrolled families, assisting with the onboarding of our 110+ seasonal staff members, and overseeing the inventory and sales of our onsite Camp Store.

Office staff typically work between 7:30am and 6:30pm within an eight hour shift, and enjoy more flexibility for time off and enjoying the camp environment in the evening as they are not directly responsible for campers.

Snacks, Snacks and more snacks

In order for our campers to enjoy all that camp has to offer, they need to be properly fueled. We have snack time built into our schedule during the transitions between electives and soccer to make sure that everyone can enjoy an extra boost between meals. Our dedicated snack shack has plenty of options for campers to enjoy a healthy snack when they need it! Staff are welcome to come grab a snack too. Once Campers have had their snack we take attendance and help make sure campers head to the correct next activity.

Cabin Time

After lunch everyone heads back to their cabins to enjoy some well-deserved rest time with much-needed air conditioning. Campers can use this time to write a letter home, play a game, or work on their cabin skit for the closing campfire. Our Res Life team will make their way through each cabin to check in on all of our campers, collect letters, and engage with both campers and cabin staff. Our campers in our oldest Res Life group, Thorns, will have the option to spend one of their Cabin times in the lakeside lounge.

During elective periods girls can explore, spend time with friends, and most importantly, relax and have fun! They will have two 60-minute elective periods each day. Athletes will have the option to choose from 8-12 different elective activities each elective period. Each camper gets the opportunity to select their two electives for the following day during one of their meals. Their options include:

      • General Swim
      • SUP
      • Funyak
      • Archery
      • Rec Deck
      • Hiking
      • Cooking
      • Arts & Crafts
      • Wood Craft
      • Fire Building
Elective activities are facilitated by our elective cabin staff members.

Elective Sessions

Soccer Sessions

Each camper will receive nine 90-minute training sessions each week, one each morning and one after dinner. Our goal is to meet each camper where they are at, and provide consistent individualized instruction. At the beginning of the week, all athletes are placed into one of our 6 training groups. Each training group is made up of approximately 25-30 players working with the same 4-5 coaches throughout the week. We also offer a Goalkeeper track which is at least one 45-minute Goalkeeping session per day. Soccer sessions are facilitated by our Master coaches, Head coaches and Assistant coaches.

We have a maximum of 175 campers at camp during our weekly sessions. We break camp down into five Res Life Groups: Courage, Dash, Spirit, Reign and Thorns. Res life groups not only serve to create smaller family groups within camp, but to help provide support and a sense of belonging. Typically, there are 3-5 cabins per group and each group is overseen by a Res Life Leader. To maximize our fields and elective spaces we run a split schedule. This means Lower camp and Upper camp will train and participate in Electives at alternate times throughout the day.

Support Staff

Our team of Support Staff comes from all over the world to work behind the scenes ensuring camp runs smoothly. Support Staff roles include:

  • Head Chef
  • Assistant Chef
  • Kitchen Staff
  • Housekeeping Staff
  • Maintenance Assistants
While these roles don’t exactly follow the same schedule during activity periods, Support Staff members will have a daily schedule to make sure that camp is kept clean, well-maintained, and well-fed! Even though Support Staff members do not have campers to look after, we still find many of our support staff enjoying evening and camp activities in their off time.

Cabin Time, Embers and Shower Time

After evening activity, everyone heads back to their cabins to shower and get ready for bed. Campers can also use this time to play games in the cabin, write letters home, and have some much needed downtime after their fun-filled day of soccer and electives! Embers is our evening ritual to help facilitate conversations with campers about their day and to bring the energy down for bed. We do a different activity each night which could be a range of High Low Hero, If Every Day Were A Berky Day, or Three Good Things.

Elective Sessions

Nurses and Wellness Specialists

Each week of camp we have two Nurses (RN) and a Wellness Specialist present at camp. These staff members help oversee the day-to-day operations of our Health Center and ensure the care for both campers and staff. Before each camp session, our health staff reviews every athlete’s health history and medication needs. All personal medication is stored in the Health Center and distributed by the nurses at mealtimes or bedtime. The Nurses’ and Wellness Specialist’s day will typically start as early as 7:30am for Breakfast med pass and end shortly after medpass in the evening at 8:30pm.

  • Sunday Opening Campfire: Homemade cookies and milk
  • Monday Cabin Cup: Homemade Rice Krispie Treats
  • Tuesday Berky Tourney: Chipwhich or Klondike Icecream
  • Wednesday Closing Campfire: S'mores

Flag Raise

Every morning we raise the flag with the cabins in Lower Camp. Starting the day together with some shares from the day before, shouting out friends that have helped uplift others around camp, and an inspirational quote before we head to breakfast.

Elective Sessions

Friendship Circle

Friendship Circles are part of our long-standing camp traditions. At the end of every day, we come together in Res Life groups to reconnect with friends, share good things that happened during the day, and sing “Linger”. Listen to our Linger song here.

Cabin Counselors

Our cabin counselors live in the cabins as positive role models. All cabin counselors are either an Assistant Soccer Coach or Elective Instructor (General, Lifeguard, Arts and Crafts etc). Cabin counselors are supported and mentored in the cabin role by our Res Life Leaders. Cabin counselor work schedules will include: 2 hours off per day, 1 evening off per week, and 1 day off per week.

Arrival and Departure Days

Every Sunday morning we welcome arrivals to camp. We have campers departing Berky both on Thursday afternoons at the end of the session or on Saturday afternoons at the end of our Bridge. Arrival and Departure Day are an all-hands-on-deck process. Schedules will look slightly different to a full day of activities to allow for seamless drop-off and pick-up of campers.

Beyond technical and tactical development, athletes engage in daily mental skills training—both on and off the field. Daily mental skills topics are delivered in a fun and engaging way, and are incorporated into training sessions and included in post-training debrief discussions. Mental skill sessions are facilitated by our Head Coaches.

Soccer Coaches

There are three levels of our Soccer Coaching staff: Assistant Coaches, Head Coaches, and Master Coaches. Every session we will have six different training groups-each with a Master Coach planning and overseeing the session, a Head Coach helping to deliver the sessions, and two to three Assistant Coaches who will demonstrate drills, facilitate, and coach smaller groups. This ensures that all of the campers are being met at the level they are at and can have some individualized feedback throughout the week. Coaches will follow the daily schedule that mirrors their training group, and will be on the fields for one training session in the morning and one in the afternoon. Coaches typically take time off for an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon when their training group is not on the field.

Res Life Leaders

Our team of Res Life Leaders each oversee a group of 3-4 cabins every week and provide support for our Cabin Counselors and campers. All of our Res Life Leaders have previously worked at Berky as Cabin Counselors and are a wealth of knowledge for first-time staff and campers alike. Every day, the Res Life team will check in on their cabins before breakfast, during rest hour, and before bed time to make sure everything is going well throughout camp. They will also be in touch with parents to inform them of how their daughter is doing at camp, give feedback to counselors on performance, and are more than happy to play a quick round of Uno if they have the time!

Evening Activity

Every night we come together as a community to enjoy our evening activity:

  • Sunday: Opening Campfire - Kids sit back and watch us staff take to the stage
  • Monday: Cabin Cup - Usually a weird wacky competition for all cabins to compete in for bragging rights
  • Tuesday: Berky Tourney - A themed competitive round robin soccer tournament under the lights
  • Wednesday: Closing Campfire - Cabins perform skits together and we get to watch our session recap video
Activities and themes vary from week to week. Campers will have the chance to make friends in other cabins, bond with their counselors and cabinmates, and enjoy some good old clean healthy fun!
