My Most Favored Transition Metals

Transition metals have a fastinating chemical reaction: They have partially filled D subshells, allowing D orbitals to undergo chemical bondage and change the colors of these transition metals.

Chromium

Chromium is the 24th element on the periodic Table and has an atomic number of 51.996(52 when rounded). The Root word "chrom" derives from greek meaning "color". Chromium III oxide (chrome green) heated with potassium carbonate and potassium nitrate to transition to a yellow color, Chromium(K2CrO4)

Vanadium

Vanadium is another transition metal. its the 23rd element with an atomic number of 50.942. It's transition material, Vanadium dioxide (VO2), undergoes a thermally-induced insulator around 68* Celcius[1,2]. The transition occurs between a dielectric monoclinic phase at lower temperatures and a metallic rutile phase at the higher temperatures[3].

Iron

Iron is a more common metal. It's the 26th element and has an atomic number of 55.845. Iron III oxide or ferric Oxide(Fe2O3) is an inorganic compound. Iron II oxide or Ferrous oxide (FeO) is a more rare compound than Ferric Oxide.

Cobalt

Cobalt, another transition metal, is the 27th element with an atomic number of 58.933. The most common oxidation levels of Cobolt are +2 and +3 [CoH2O6]2+ and [CoH2O6]3+

Zinc

The Last element to cover is Zinc. It is the 30th element and has an atomic number of 65.380. While Zinc is classified as a transition metal, electrons in its filled 3d10 shell do not participate in chemical reactions; hence, the oxidation level be +2
