Community Needs
Within every community, there are its strengths and necessities, some of which need improvement.
Gaps:
- Clothing is limited in certain locations
- Medical care must be paid for out of pocket
- Limited emotional support due to low staff and language barrier
- Lack of clear guidance for parents to get their own housing
Needs:
- Emotional support
- Food
- Clothing
- Medical services
- A safe environment to learn
- Parental guidance through US systems that lead to housing and other needs
STH Program Address
Although there is not a step-by-step action plan, the responsibilities of the Bridge The Gap Social workers and interns are geared towards meeting the holistic needs of our students.
- Provide group and individualized counseling and incorporate Social Emotional Learning
- Share resources that direct families to pantries and/or clothing distribution sites
- Collaborate with school staff to discuss interventions to support the child and create a more comfortable atmosphere for learning
- Using mentorship strategies to improve absenteeism and school behavior
My Service Proposal
Due to an expected increase in immigration, there needs to be a focus on getting immigrants out of shelters and into housing ASAP!!!My Proposal: Create a specialized group of bilingual caseworkers dedicated to navigating and guiding immigrant families through the housing system
- weekly visits to the families
- Online and in-person workshops (at schools, in the shelters)
- Tapping into the community's sociability and motivation
Thanks!
