What is Literacy?
Literacy
Literacy is not limited to its traditional definition of reading and writing. Rather, literacy is being able to use technology to communicate to an audience through all three modalities of communication: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational without forgetting their cultural, social, linguistic, and cognitive background. It is knowing how what to say to whom when and why. It is essential for language teachers to teach literacy in their classroom
Literacy in Language Classroom
Literacy in the language classroom is:
- learner-centric
- It enables students' interaction and collaboration.
- Learners exposure and interaction with various texts (video, audio, book, poster, journal, art, social media posts etc) to create meaning.
- Socio-cultural awareness with the texts.
- Interpretation & creativity.
- Critical thinking and meaning-making.
- Ability to solve problem.
Teacher role in enhacing literacy
A teacher is to facilitate language learning by: - Using the target language 90%- Designing meaningful and interesting content and activities - Using technologies to sparkle curiosity, enthusiasm, collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving - Using authentic materials. - Enhance all three modes (interpersonal, interpretative, and presentation) of comunication during activities
