We will leave the classroom today to visit our local marine environment. Our enquiry question is: ‘How littered is our marine environment?’ We will be working in groups, supervised by an adult. We will be collecting data from the area using different methods. Let us see what they are…

In your groups, you will complete three tally charts, choosing different locations along the marine environment. Number each tally chart with the location the data is from (using 1, 2 or 3) - this should correspond with your sketch map. Complete the tally charts by marking the different types of litter you observe.

In groups, take photos of the litter you find in each location, as well as any evidence of animals or plants.

  • On your piece of paper, draw an aerial sketch map of your fieldwork location.
  • You can use a digital version to copy from.
  • Mark any human or physical features, such as the car park or sand dunes.
  • When you get to your location, you will need to mark the three areas where you collect data on your sketch map.
