LOCATION China is located in East Asia and on the West Pacific coast.

POPULATION It is currently the world's most populous country, with a population of around 1.428 billion in 2017.

SURFACE China has an area of about 9.6 million square kilometers (3.7 million square miles), it is the third or fourth largest country in the world by area.

Chinese economy Since the introduction of economic reforms in 1978, China's economy has been one of the world's fastest-growing with annual growth rates consistently above 6 percent.Since 2010, China has been the world's second-largest economy, and since 2014, the largest economy in the world.

Chinese Civil War With the Civil War, in 1949, China was divided, the Communist Party of China led by Mao Zedong established the People's Republic of China on the continent and the nationalist government led by the Kuomintang retreated to the island of Taiwan where it ruled until 1996 when Taiwan made the transition to democracy.

HISTORY China emerged as one of the world's first civilizations, in the fertile basin of the Yellow River in the North China Plain. For millennia, China's political system was based on hereditary monarchies, or dynasties:

  • The Semi-Mythical Xia Dynasty in 21st century.
  • The Han Dynasty from 206 BC until 220 AC,
  • The Tang Dynasty (618–907).
  • The Qing Dynasty ended in 1912.
