Some words in Jamaican Patois

Jamaican English is the official language of the country and used in all domains of public life. It is not only the language of the government, the law and the media but also used for education and for almost all kinds of written communication. Although this is the official language of Jamaica, the majority of the population speaks Jamaican Patois. Patois is and English-based creole language that developed in the 17th century through contact between African slaves and English-speaking slave owners.

Jamaican English developed parallel to Jamaican Creole after the British had taken over the island from the Spanish in 1655.Due to the continued coexistence of Jamaican Creole and English, a linguistc continuum has developed, wich ranges between a broad variety of Jmaican Creole to an acrolectal vatiety of Jamaican English. Before Jamaican reached its political independence from Britain in 1962, the most acrolectal variety had been a standard form of British English.
