What is ASEAN?
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, commonly referred to as ASEAN, is a geopolitical and economic organization of 10 countries in Southeast Asia.
So how many members does ASEAN have?
It was established in Bangkok, Thailand by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
Since then, membership has expanded to include Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia.

The history of development and formation of ASEAN
Establishment of ASEAN, the birth of a regional organization in Southeast Asia
1967
The Treaty of Bali, the beginning of regional cooperation
1976
Vietnam joins ASEAN, opening a period of integration and development in Southeast Asia
1995
Towards the ASEAN Community on the implementation of Vision 2020
2003
The main goals of the ASEAN association
The region's principal aims include the acceleration of economic growth, social progress, and cultural development among its members, as well as the promotion of regional peace
With these targets, 'One Vision, One Identity, One Community' is chosen as the bloc's motto. It has been estimated that a free trade area will be established in the ASEAN region by 2020.
