Authority

Authority is a legitimate power. This means that a person who has authority has the right to exercise power. He or she is obeyed by the people because he or she is recognized as the rightful or legitimate ruler or leader.

DISCUSSION

Bands during the prehistoric period were only comprised of family members and their leadership structures were less complicated and simple.

Then, the establishment of larger communities such as tribes and chiefdoms paved the way to a more complex form of organization.

  • Less reliance on kinship relationship as basis of political structures

LEGITIMACY AND TYPES OF AUTHORITY

LEGITIMACY

meaning " to declare lawful" and is defined as "rightful"

Political philosophers treat legitimacy as moral or rational principle. The claim to legitimacy is thus more important than the fact of obedience.

TYPES OF AUTHORITY

TRADITIONAL AUTHORITY

Authority is based on a system that is believed to have "always existed" . Some people have this type of authority because they inherited it or they occupy a position that has been passed on to them. Based on long-established customs and traditions.

TYPES OF AUTHORITY

CHARISMATIC AUTHORITY

DISCUSSION

"Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate."

“Those who have less in life should have more in law.”

Charismatic authority is based on the presumed special and extraordinary characteristics or qualities possessed by a certain individual. They are often seen as "born leaders" and "heroes". But it is the most unstable type of authority .

TYPES OF AUTHORITY

LEGAL-RATIONAL AUTHORITY

DISCUSSION

Legal-rational Authority is the most typical type of authority in modern societies. Leaders can rightfully wield authority if they obtain their position according to established procedures such as elections or through appointments. Among the three types of authority, a legal-rational system has the highest degree of stability.

TYPES OF POLITICAL ORGANIZATIONS AND LEADERSHIP STRUCTURES

Anthropologists define political organizations as "the groups within a culture". They are responsible for

  • public decision-making and leadership
  • maintaining social cohesion and order
  • protecting group rights;
  • ensuring safety from external threats

DISCUSSION

Different types of political organizations and leadership structures emerged as social interactions underwent transformations. In a nutshell, leaders were seen as the head of the community who ensures peace and security within society.

Political Dynasties

Are believed to have always existed in advanced democratic states. A dynasty refers to a succession from rulers from the same line of descent. Meanwhile, political clientelism is defined as "giving material goods in return for electoral support.

DISCUSSION

Nation-State

A nation consists of a distinct population od people bound together by a common culture, history, and tradition. The state on the other hand, is a political unit that has sovereignty - the legitimate and ultimate authority of the state.

State

Thus, a state is a political unit that encompasses several communities, has bureaucracy, and has leaders that possess legitimate power.

Bureaucracy

DISCUSSION

The term bureaucracy means "ruled by officials" and is characterized by "rationality", "rule-governed behavior" and 'impersonal behavior"

Political Culture

Refers to the pattern of orientation to political objects such as parties, governement, and constitution, expressed in beliefs, symbols, and values. People generally acquire values and attitudes about politics and political institutions through the process of political socialization.
