The Miami Heat, are an American professional basketball team established in 1988 based in Miami that plays in the Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Heat have won three NBA championships (2006, 2012, and 2013).

What Makes the Miami Heat Fanbase a Discourse Community?

There is a discourse community of passionate Miami Heat fans in online discords and fans that go to the games to reach a common goal and purpose of making the team as successful and relevant as possible while giving valuable opinions and analysis on the team. The online discords and in-person gatherings in games that form discourse communities amongst fans are radically different and fall under Swale's criteria of a discourse community.

Negativity Instagram

When the team has a bad game or is on a stretch of bad games, negativity and hatred can be communicated within the discord toward the team. As a result, it begins to spread to other people in the discourse community and form a genre of hateful messages and tones which negatively affects the culture. The online discourse community is a lot more critical due to the freedom people have to publish any message without consequences.

Social Media vs. At The Games

The Miami Heat fanbase discourse community is different in the live-in-person homes games. Fans at the games are much more united with just one goal and outcome: cheer for the team to help them win. No matter if a fan dislikes a specific player who is playing well and contributing to winning, the fan will cheer for the player despite negative feelings towards the player without saying anything negative, like if it was on an online social media platform.

Getting recognition from players is incredibly encouraging for the community and makes them feel valued, engaged, and a part of the team’s culture and family.
