Definitions

Abortion:

  • the deliberate termination of a pregnancy by removal or expulsion of an embryo or fetus
Fetus
  • an offspring of a human or other mammal in the stages of prenatal development that follow the embryo stage (in humans taken as beginning eight weeks after conception)
Fetal Viability
  • the point at which a fetus can survive outside the womb

Pro-Life vs. Pro-Choice

The Two Sides

  • Abortion is never acceptable
  • Life starts at contreception
  • Concerned about the wellfare of the fetus/embryo
  • No "Plan B"
  • Woman's right to choose an abortion
  • Right to access abortion
  • Concerned about the life of the women
  • Support access to birth control, sex education, etc.

Human Rights

  • We have the right to be free from interference with privacy, home, and family.
  • We have the right to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health.
  • We have the right to enjoy the benefits of scientific progress.

Roe v. Wade

the right to choose abortion is protected by the Constitution and that abortion will be legal throughout the United States

Dangers of Illegalization

  • Overflow of children in foster system
  • Development of mental illness
  • Starvation in poor families
  • Deaths due to life-threatening pregnancies that cannot be terminated
  • Rise in unsafe abortions
  • Many women still find themselves pregnant and needing medical assistance due to unsafe attempted abortion

Real Example

Unsafe Abortions in the Philippines

  • About 1,000 die each year from abortion complications
  • Tens of thousands of women are hospitalized each year for complications from unsafe abortion
  • Abortion is common, but is often performed in unsanitary conditions and using outdated techniques

Education about pregnancy and ways to prevent it is crucial

  • Abortions not required if people can avoid pregnancy
  • Birth Control and other availible tools should be known
  • If abortion is legal, education on how to get a safe one can safe a life
