Introduction

  • Definition of Gothic
  • Famous writer

The Gothic literature became popular because of the popularity of science, religion and industry. It's basically a short story with horror and romance. The gothic novel will typically follow a plot with suspense, mystery and paranormal events. In the Gothic novel we can find some common elements like the atmosphere (dark, gloomy, suspense...) or the place, this is an important thing in the gothic novel the place is often a Hauted house or castle ( Victorian House). There as a lot of creature in gothic novel like monster, gost, witches and vampires. The most famous writer of Gothic novels is Edgard Allan Poe, he wrote the fall of house of Husher, the tell tale heart...

The first documents of Gothic literature is “The castle of Otranto”

This document is an extract of "The Castle of Otranto" by Horace Walpole published in 1764.Horace Walpole was an english writer, art historian, man of letter and politician.

It tells the story of Manfred, the prince of Otranto, who is keen to secure the castle for his descendants in the face of a mysterious curse. The novel begins with the death of Manfred's son, Conrad, who is crushed to death by an enormous helmet on the morning of his wedding to the beautiful princess Isabella.

I didn’t really like this story I found it a bit complicated to understand. I don’t hate it but it’s not really the kind of book I read in my personal time.

The second document studying in class is "The fall of the House Of Usher" by Edgard Allan Poe in 1839.

Edgar Allan Poe, born January 19, 1809 in Boston and died October 7, 1849 in Baltimore, is a poet, novelist, short story writer, literary critic, playwright and American publisher, as well as one of the leading figures of American romanticism. Best known for his tales, short stories and novels

The story is narrated by a childhood friend of Roderick Usher, the owner of the Usher mansion. This friend is riding to the house, having been summoned by Roderick Usher, having complained in his letter that he is suffering from some illness and expressing a hope that seeing his old friend will lift his spirits

Of all the papers studying in class this is my favorite, I really like the anguishing atmosphere that emanate from the story and I didn’t find it difficult to read. I really liked the story

My first personal document of gothic littérature is the movie "Edward Scissorhands" by Tim burton

Timothy Walter Burton, known as Tim Burton, is an American director, screenwriter and producer born on August 25, 1958 in Burbank, California. Master of the fantastic influenced by Edgar Allan Poe, excellent storyteller and outstanding graphic designer, he signed the direction of Beetlejuice, Batman, Edward Scissorhands...

Synopsis : In a hilltop castle lived a brilliant inventor who created Edward. Although he has an irresistible charm, he is not quite perfect. The inventor's sudden death left him with sharp scissors for hands. Edward lived in obscurity until the day sweet Miss Avon introduced him to the joys of a real home.

Despite the fact that this film is a very big film of tim Burton I didn’t really like it because it’s not really the style of film I generally like.

The second document is the movie "the legend of sleepy hollow" by Tim burton

Synopsis: In 1799, in a small town in New England, several corpses were found decapitated. The heads disappeared. Terrified, the locals are convinced that these murders are committed by a strange and furious horseman, whose rumor claims he is himself headless. The New York authorities then sent their finest hound to clarify this mystery. Ichabod Crane doesn’t believe in legends or post-mortem revenge. But, as soon as he arrives, he succumbs to the strange and poisonous charm of the beautiful Katrina Van Tassel

I really liked this film, the atmosphere and the police side of the film as well as the love story made me really like the film.

The last document is a movie " The Adams Family". The original writer is Charles Addams in 1938, it's was write like comics in the newspaper.

Charles Addams, born January 7, 1912 in Westfield (New Jersey) and died September 29, 1988 in New York, is an American cartoonist. Known for his black humor and macabre characters, he signed under the name of Chas Addams.

Synopsis : In an old and gloomy mansion lives the Addams family, whose members, each one crazier and more delirious than the other, look more like the dead than the living. Twenty-five years ago, Uncle Fester disappeared because of a love rivalry. Everyone misses him, and now he's back.

The gothic and morbid universe, and the originality and its funny and quirky characters really made me love this film. The atmosphere that mixes fantastic and black humor is really good.
