What are the practices of Antique people do?
What are the famous festivals, culture and their tradition?
WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
The forests in the east and the sea in the west, however, temper the climate with rainfall during the rest of the year. The mineral resources of the province are copper and chromite-manganese. Its most important products are rice, corn, coconut, cassava, mongo and muscovado sugar, particularly in the towns of Sibalom, San Jose, Patnongan and Dao in the north, and Pandan, Culasi and Bugasong in the south. Tuna and bangus fry abound in the official fishing ground of Cuyo Pass, along the Antique coast.
ANTIQUE
ANTIQUE is one of the provinces comprising Panay Island; the other three are Iloilo, Capiz and Aklan. It is a narrow strip of land stretching along the entire west coast of the island shielded from storms by mountain ranges in the east that cut off the rains of the northwest monsoon and cause a dry season from November to April.
Although with vast stretches of irrigated rice fields and rich fishing grounds, the people engage in cottage industries basket, hat and mat weaving, pot making, piña and jusi cloth weaving, and salt processing.
Classified as the best sacada laborers in the world by the International Labor Organization, they migrate to the sugar cane fields of Negros during harvest season.
INDIGENOUS PEOPLE IN ANTIQUE
- The ancestors of the Antiqueños lived a very different life from what we have today. They lived in a land called Malandog where the first Malayan settlement was established. The Aeta or "Ati" lived a life of extreme challenges: no instant food, no electricity, no gadgets used for communication.
- The beauty of their culture truly reflects on their personalities, the joyful, and innocent face reveals the genuine story of the origin of the Antiquenos. Indigenous people in this area do not like to be called Ati, their source of income is farming and making charcoal.
- The existence of indigenous tribes represents the true meaning of our past and the colorful cultures that were passed down from generation to generation. It is a respect that we must give them for they are the way of the nation's past thus we must be proud of our history.
DO’S AND DON'TS - Death rituals
- The forests in the east and the sea in the west, Another thing that you must know and discover about Antique are its beliefs. Antiqueños are known to be the number one follower or abider of so many beliefs that were created or started by their ancestors. And one famous belief that they follow since then until now is Antique’s superstitious death rituals.
- Don’t sweep the floor while the body is still lying in state or else other deaths in the family may follow.
- No tears should fall on the dead or the coffin for it would make a person’s journey to the afterlife difficult.
DO’S AND DON'TS - Death rituals
- When someone sneezes at the wake, pinch him.
- Food from the wake should not be brought home because it is believed that the dead touch all of it.
- After a funeral service, guests should not go home directly. This way the spirit of the dead won’t follow them to their house.
- These are just beliefs that Antiqueños do have. It may seem a little bit weird, but their elders influenced them so much to make them believe and follow such superstitious beliefs until now.
TRADITIONS
- One of the famous traditions in Antique is the celebration of their festivals. Antique celebrates its province-wide annual fiesta called Biinirayan Festival. “Binirayan” literally means “where they sailed to”. It is also a remembrance of the ten bornean datus who settled in such a place in the early 15th century.
- Antiqueños always felt the need to be reunited and to get together every year in the celebration and remembrance of such history. Some activities during Binirayan Festival are: Torch Parade, Biray, Fluvial Parade, Bugal kang Antique Awards, Lin-ay kang Antique, Pasundayag and many more.
- But most especially, the town of Hamtic has a great part in this celebration. Hamtic is a very famous town in Antique, especially in barangay Malandog, which memorializes the first Malayan Settlement in the Philippines led by Datu Sumakwel.
