Introduction

Your task is to create the world and setting of... New Media: A text of your choice from a selection Creative Writing: A story you write with your group You will work in groups of 1-4 to make this happen. You will be providing an analysis of the short story and the setting using Minecraft signs. For a creative attempt, you can make a theme park or some other symbolic presentation form. For Grade 12's, host a 10-minute experience. Afterwards, you will be doing a team reflection and self-assessment with me to determine how you did on your project.

Curricular Competencies

  1. Think critically, creatively, and reflectively to explore ideas within, between, and beyond texts
  2. Recognize and identify the role of personal, social, and cultural contexts, values, and perspectives in texts
  3. Recognize how language constructs personal, social, and cultural identity
  4. Construct meaningful personal connections between self, text, and world
  5. Respond to text in personal, creative, and critical ways
  6. Exchange ideas and viewpoints to build shared understanding and extend thinking
  7. Transform ideas and information to create original texts.

Process

1. Find a group2. Select a story of your choice to sign up for and reserve 3. Analyze the features as a group. Look at its setting first. 4. Think of how you can translate this into Minecraft. 5. Create the world! Have roles and responsibilities for each other. 6. Set up the experience with safeguards. 7. Present and invite everyone to your world. 8. Self reflect and assess with me after.

Ideation

Think about how you can make your story come alive and compelling

Creation Time

Make your world and set up your presentation - 1 Practice Block - 1 Text Selection or Brainstorm Block - 4 Lab blocks, 4-5 classroom blocks

Map Checklist 40%

My map is big enough for 30 people to walk around comfortably

My map looks like I put a lot of work into it and it looks interesting

My map has default parameters that are suitable

My map has creative liberties that go beyond the text and can be explained. WOW factor!

My map shows off one or multiple moods accurate to the story.

Host Experience for senior grades only (next slide)

Experience

Parameters

Interactive

Safeguards

Create a 10-minute interactive experience that represents the themes in the text. Everyone in the class will be invited to your server

The experience should be interesting and involve student participation It should be clear what the lesson and design choices of the activity are.

Set enough safeguards that whatever can go wrong in your project can be prevented. REMEMBER: Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong!

What can go Wrong?

I made a huge mansion for the students to explore and I'll be showing them around each room and telling them what happens. This is on peaceful and they can't break blocks! After, they have to go through the rooms to find each part of the story in chests.

I'm making a scavenger hunt where students have to look in chests. Students will get one fish from each chest. Whoever gets all the fish wins! To make it fun, it will be set to survival mode.

What can go wrong?

What can go wrong?

I made a parkour map with one block tiles and it will be set to survival to make sure its competitive!

I want everyone to make a redstone contraption and they win if they can put a nametag on an animal. After, all students will gather to drink potions and some of them are poisonous!

Participation and Hosting

Being the Teacher

Roles

Participation

Everyone needs a job. Usually it looks like this: 1. Facilitator/Teacher 2. Supervisor/Helper 3. Damage control in world 4. Guide in world

You can ask the students questions to see if their understanding is on track. You have a compelling hook to your lesson You make sure everyone gets a chance to play and learn

Can you guide the class on what to do effectively? Are you good at explaining the story and concepts? Do you have a presence in the classroom without my help?

Tips and Tricks You may have to search how to do some of these

  • Divide tasks or work together for difficult parts
  • Change respawn area in case someone dies
  • Learn how to set time of day and change difficulty quickly
  • There is a way to fill squares and cubes of blocks (great for buildings). Search up "how to use the fill command in Minecraft" on Youtube.
  • Bigger isn't always better!
  • Give barrier blocks to block certain areas /give @p barrier for the experience and field trip. SUPER IMPORTANT!
  • Follow how-to guides or look for inspiration online!
  • Keep asking yourself, what can go wrong?
  • Small things help the atmosphere like trees, paths to buildings, having varied walls, animals etc.

NOTE: You may be quizzed on the plot and themes of the text to see if you have read and worked on the text. If you are unable to prove you have an understanding of the story, you will be asked to do something else to prove your learning.

Finally, your group will have a meeting with me to talk about how you all did and how well you thought you did on the requirements

HAVE FUN!

It's a group effort!

Alternative

Not everyone is going to like Minecraft. You may choose to work individually or with others that are not playing Minecraft to do an alternative project. You can propose what kind of project you can do that still fulfills the marking scheme. For examples, click on the circles.
