- co-director with his brother Carloman I- continued his father's policy of protecting the community - chased the Lombards out of power in northern Italy -incursion into Muslim Spain - campaign against the Saxons - Charlemagne unified a large part of Europe into one empire. - massacre of Verden - in 800 he was crowned emperor of the Romans by Pope Leon III on Christmas Day

-Charlemagne tries to impose Christianity -burns the pagan sanctuary of the god of the god Irminsul -A Christian church in Deventer (city in the east of the Netherlands) is burned by the Saxons -the last peoples of Europe to keep their pagan gods - Charlemagne's war against the Saxons, 33 years -he engaged them in battle 18 times.

Charlemagne died of pleurisy in his palace in Aachen, Rhineland, on January 28, 814 His son Louis the Pious succeeded him. He was at the head of a huge empire. This did not last. From 830, his sons, Lothaire, Louis the Germanic and Charles the Bald, fought each other.
