How Speech Pathologists & Audiologists Work Together ?
-Together, an audiologist and speech therapist will provide counseling, set expectations, identify communication strategies and be advocates for their clients.
Why do speech-language pathologists need to know about audiology?
-SLPs need a strong understanding of hearing because it’s so closely tied to our ability to speak.-Humans learn speech through their ears.
Ways audiologists & sLP might collaborate include:
- Establish hearing-related goals. - Develop a comprehensive care plan. - Share resources and knowledge. - Manage expectations. - Provide device and accessory assistance. - Provide communication counselling & auditory training. - Track patient progress & make adjustments to therapy or hearing devices.
CASE STUDY:
A 2-year-old boy was referred to an audiologist for a hearing test
His parents noticed that whenever they called his name he wouldn’t respond
Whenever he is involved in a conversation he would say “Huh?” or even speak with unclear words
- The result of the hearing test shows that the child has profound hearing loss in both ears. For this reason, he was referred to an ENT for a cochlear implant. After the successful completion of this, he was advised to visit a speech language pathologist. -After the SLP evaluation, She explained that the child shows severe receptive and expressive language delays. -So, the SLP intervened and had therapy sessions with the child in addition to the collaboration with his parents. After a period of time, he shows development and improvement
Recommendations to avoid hearing loss:
-Early hearing test for newborns -Increase the distance between you and the source of the noise. -Reduce your time in noisy areas and wear hearing protection if you are at one. -If you are listening to music, keep the volume at a safe level. -Check for ear wax. -Silicone or conical ear plugs are recommended for swimming and avoiding loud noise
