Mobile Devices

Both smartphones and tablets are types of mobile devices, which are essentially types of hand-held computers. It's like having a computer in your hand! Mobile devices are very portable and versitile, and for many people they will service all of their digital and computing needs. Some limitations:

  • Often will need Wi-Fi for full capability
  • Limited / no USB ports
  • No optical drive etc
Other types: Notebook, handheld gaming console, pocket calculator, smartwatches, digital cameras etc...

This week, we are going to start with the basics of your device.

Next week, we will delve into the software... apps!

What type of Smartphone do you have? Apple or Android? What does this mean?

Operating system

Your device will have a dedicated mobile operating system. The two most common types are:

  • Apple iOS
  • Google Android
What type of device you choose will come down to personal preference, they are generally considered to be as good as each other for everyday personal use. While they operate in similar ways, they are not exactly the same.

Using your Settings App

Apple and Android

What is Settings? The Settings app lets you control how your phone works — things like Wi-Fi, sounds, screen brightness, apps, and privacy. 🛠 How to Find It: Android: Look for the ⚙️ gear icon labeled Settings iPhone: Look for the ⚙️ grey gear icon labeled Settings Usually found on your home screen or in the App Drawer (Android).

Using your Settings App

🔍 Tips: Use the Search bar at the top of Settings to find things quickly. Scroll gently — there are lots of settings, and it's okay to explore. You can't "break" anything by looking!

How long will your device last?

Let's practice with your devices...Any questions?
