EPSS GUIDE

Título 1

Learn how to obtain and interpret EPSS. A useful tool for evaluation of global LV systolic function.

step 5

Step 1 · 2D View

Obtain a parasternal long axis view of the heart. The LV cavity should be at its widest.

Step 2 · Align Cursor

Align the cursor across the tips of the anteriorleaflet of the mitral valve. Position number 2.

Step 3 · Press M-Mode Button

Pressing the M-Mode button will now give you a trace of the motion of the anterior leaflet of the mitral valve against time.

Step 5 · Measure EPSS Distance

EPSS stands for E-Point Septal Separation. The E wave refers to mitral valve opening during early diastole. The A wave refers to mitral leaflet opening during atrial contraction.

Step 6 · Interpretation

EPSS < 7mm indicates normal LVEF.EPSS between 7 - 10mm indicates mild to moderate LV systolic failure. EPSS > 10mm indicates severe LV systolic dysfunction.
