The CORALL Project

MEET THE TEAM

Coaching-oriented Online Resources for the Autonomous Learning of Languages for Specific Purposes (LSP)

The objective of the CORALL project is to simultaneously scaffold students in becoming more autonomous learners and to support LSP (Languages for Specific Purposes) teachers in helping these learners to become more autonomous. Our aim is to provide a supportive foundation for learners’ language development in LSP through the development of their autonomous language learning skills in an online environment by creating open-educational resources for both teachers and learners.

An introduction to autonomous language learning

Autonomous language learning

Languages that refuse to ‘stay still’ and keep constantly evolving instead, jobs that do not exist yet but that we will depend on in the future, technologies that challenge and in turn change how we educate and are educated in return: in view of so many unknowns, one of the most valuable ‘lessons’ that we can teach our students is how to take the (language) learning process into their own hands in order to prepare them for the challenges that lie ahead in their professional and academic lives.

In view of such complexity, it is not surprising that fostering autonomous language learning (ALL) may require a wide variety of approaches to cater for the various educational contexts, expectations as well as restrictions. These can range from resource- and technology-based, through learner- and classroom-based, to curriculum and teacher-based ones (Benson 2001).

Ultimately, the aim of the CORALL partnership was to provide flexibility and choice for teachers and it is in this spirit that the educators interested in using the material developed by the CORALL project in the form of Open Educational Resources (OER) are encouraged to select, adapt and develop it further and thus, to prepare their students for ALL in a way that fits their own contexts.

First steps to employing an autonomous approach

The CORALL Tools and Modules for ALL (autonomous language learning) in LSP - an innovative element of this E+ project - aim to help you encourage your students to become full partners in their language learning. With the help of CORALL, students will discover ways to develop opportunities for practice in making informed choices to gradually take on more responsibility.
