Nuclear weapons

Are you ready?

During World War II, the United States of America built a new weapon. It was bigger than a gun or a tank and much more dangerous. It was called a nuclear bomb.

It was made to kill a lot of people in one explosion. It would also hurt people afterwards, by giving them radiation sickness - something which happens if you are nearby a nuclear bomb when it explodes.

In 1945 the USA dropped 2 nuclear bombs in Japan. This was the only time a nuclear bomb has ever been used as a weapon in the world. It was so scary and big that people decided to never do it again.

Lots of people in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, where the bombs were dropped, were killed and lots got sick afterwards.

Talking about nuclear bombs can be scary. If you get upset or scared, find a grown up to talk to. They will help you feel better and safer.
