SUMMARY OF EEG (ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHY)
Clinical Role
INTRODUCTION
- Physiological alternations in brain activity.
- Diagnosis of conditions-insomnia sleep apnea, epilepsy, & herpes Simplex Encephalitis.
- Used in ICU during surgeries.
- EEG is used to evaluate the electrical activity of the brain, with using various surface electrodes.
- The signal is amplified , filtered, & displayed in the EEG machine.
History
Source of EEG Rhythmicity
- Richard Carton discovered prosperities of the brain by recording the electrical activity in animal in 1875.
- Hans Berger recorded first human EEG in 1924.
- Thalamus
- Normal Alpha Rhysthms
- Oscillations of sleep spindles
Pyramidal Cells Produces Bulk of EEG Signals
- Layer III and V of cerebral cortex
- RMP -65 mV
- Postsynaptic Potential
- EPSP (Sodium)
- IPSP (Chloride/Potassium)
