1. Who was Matthew?

ÍNDEX

Matthew the Evangelist, was one of the twelve apostles chosen by Jesus of Nazareth. Matthew the Apostle was born in the first century in Judea and was a tax collector in Capernaum: he collected the taxes that the Jews had to pay to the Romans

1. Who was?

Saint Matthew wrote the Gospel that bears his name with Christians of Jewish origin in mind: in the text he emphasizes that Jesus is the Messiah who fulfills the promises of the Old Testament. It can be said with almost certainty that he wrote in Aramaic.

2. What did Saint Matthew write?

There are several theories about the place where Matthew was buried. One of the most commonly accepted theories is that his remains are found in the Italian city of Salerno, in the Campania region. According to tradition, the remains of Matthew were brought to Salerno by Christians who fled persecution in Palestine in the 5th century. Legend has it that in the year 930, the bishop of Salerno, Landolfo II, received a vision in which Mateo indicated the place where his remains were. According to tradition, the bishop ordered the excavation of the tomb and the body of the Apostle Matthew was found.

3.WHERE IS MATTHEW BURIED?

After Jesus' ascension into heaven, Matthew traveled the world to spread the message of Christ. It is believed that he visited Persia, Ethiopia and Arabia, founding several Christian communities on his way. Lastly, Matthew is said to have been martyred for his faith.

In addition to his work as an evangelist, Matthew is also known for having organized a banquet in honor of Jesus. According to the Gospel of Matthew, after being called by Jesus, Matthew organized a large banquet at his house and invited Jesus and many of his followers. During the banquet, Jesus taught guests and reached out to tax collectors and sinners, drawing criticism from the Pharisees and scribes.
