What are similes and metaphors?

Similes and metaphors are both a type of figurative language that compare TWO different things.

  • Similes use "like" or "as" when comparing.
  • Metaphors use "is" when comparing.

Examples of a simile

  • They are as good as gold.
  • Her hair was as soft as the clouds.
  • You lie like a rug.
  • That is as light as a feather.

Examples of a metaphor

  • She is an early bird.
  • Life is a highway.
  • This classroom is a rollercoaster.
  • Their eyes were butterflies.
