Needs Analysis

Accounting Program

The actual questionnaire used for the needs analysis is shown in Figure 1. One of the reasons why I chose questionnaires as the Needs Analysis instrument is that “questionnaires allow researchers to collect data from a large group of participants and it is reliable considering it helps to avoid biased estimates on the” (Bollen, Kenneth A., Biemer, Paul P., Karr, Alan F., Tueller, Stephen, Berzofsky, Marcus E., 2016, p. 375).

In order to assess the needs of the students for my EAP course, I conducted a questionnaire survey of Colombian students from SENA institute who have taken five levels of English in any language institute before, which will be applied in a small group of 40 students.

Syllabus design assignment

Introduction

For the development of a good course syllabus design, two essential elements are required, such as the needs analysis that starts from the evaluation of the context in which the students find themselves and how English as a foreign language interferes with the development of their activities, whether labor or educational, and of course, the gender analysis that refers to the type of texts that students will be faced with. Based on this, the teachers and the institution will be empowered to make the decisions they consider pertinent to carry out the plan, exceeding the expectations of the students and filling the spaces that concern the analysis of needs developed (Stocker J & Reddad, M, 2013)

A curriculum course is key to a successful process to the extent that several aspects must be addressed, such as the needs analysis according to the requirements of the students based on the specifications of the work they perform and where they necessarily depend. English as a foreign language, their expectations, and the level they wish to reach. This way, the most appropriate content, methodology, and didactics to implement must be chosen. What will be the sequence of the course content according to the degree of complexity it will acquire during its development? (Richards J, 2001)

Syllabus type

Based on the findings of the need analysis, I decided to design a notional syllabus. A syllabus course means a course is constructed considering elements such as grammatical structure and vocabulary focused in a specific context, in this case: accounting English. A content-notional approach means semantic content where the students must learn to identify different types of meanings. (Sabbah, S, 2018)

Let´s have an idea about the content and the assignment that the students will develop during the course.

Based on the overview of the syllabus, let´s check a lesson plan as an example of the activities that students must develop in class.

Assessment esp

Type assessment

There are two types of assessments: summative assessment and formative assessment: the first one takes into account everything that has been explained during the course, and it is required to be measured to verify the process. Formative assessments could be applied before and during the process and not necessarily have to be graded; they also allow the students to learn while testing. Based on this premise, I decided to work with formative assessment, specifically, ongoing assessment.
