Who was he?
Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette, or best known in USA as Lafayette, was a French military officer, aristocrat and freemason.He fought in the American Revolutionary War as well as in the French Revolution and in the Austrian war. He was arrested during this period of time for 5 years, and participated in several battles like the Siege of Yorktown, the battle of Rhode island besides taking part in the French Revolution

What did he do?
Besides taking part in many conflicts of the time, mainly known by his participation in the American revolutionary war and in the French Revolution, since he was present in the General Estates in 1789. Also known as "The hero of two worlds", for the sake of wining several battles in USA, conditioning thus the war between the colonies and the UK. He was also one of the very few nobles that called for the national vote of the whole nation and a "trully assembly" that represented the whole France. The group of people who supported national vote (mainly commons) formed the national assembly, incluiding Lafayette whose thoughts were liberal.The response by the king was to lock out the group, which led to the tennis court oath. In short, he supported liberalism

BIOGRAPHY
Lafayette was born into a wealthy land owning family in the province of Auvergne, in Chavaniac, in 1756. He became an officer at the age 13 as his family's tradition was related to the military. He played a crucial role at the American revolutionary war, as he fought and commanded several battles, at the middle of the war he returned to France seeking an increase in French support. In 1780 he sailed back to America and was given important positions in the Continental army. After a great success in the war, Lafayette returned to France and was elected a member of the Estates General in 1789. He also played a really important position, since he defended the national vote, as well as the end of slavery. He advocated a truly national assembly, which represented the whole France. He took part at the Tennis coach ball oath as well. As France had declared war at Austria, he was responsible for the center European french army, with its base in Merz. In 1792 he criticed the radical groups influence like the Jacobins, which made Robespierre call him a traitor. Lafayette tried to travel to the United States after the country was being controlled by the Jacobins. After being a prisoner for 5 years, he could not travel to USA as this country and France were in a conflict. He died in 1834 because of a Pneumonia. He's now buried in the Picture cementery
